So often our goal is to try to create a life with as little discomfort as possible. We seek out a comfortable job with a comfortable income to pay for our comfortable lifestyle. And yet, this comfort often leaves us unfulfilled. We never take the risk to execute on that idea that we’ve been talking about for years. We shy away from situations and activities in which we might fail. We neglect to have compassion for those around us and those less fortunate than ourselves. And in doing so we miss out on some of life’s greatest joys.
When I started Ugmonk 5 years ago, I never in my wildest dreams expected to be where I am today. Much of the process of growing Ugmonk from a small side project to full-time brand involved me stepping outside of my comfort zone and doing things that I never thought I’d be doing. I didn’t know how to source products or develop a brand. I would have told you that you were crazy if you said I’d be on stage presenting at design conferences. I never thought I’d be standing at an orphanage in Honduras with kids climbing all over me. None of this would have happened if I hadn’t started my little side project.
The things we do are not always comfortable, but often it’s those uncomfortable experiences that reap the most joy and fulfillment in the end.
