Last week I flew out to Colorado with my wife and family for our annual Sheldon family ski trip. We had amazing weather all week and the snowboarding was phenomenal. It felt great to decompress, spend time with family and not think about my ever growing to-do list.
Everything was going great until on the second day I realized that I had dropped my iPhone at Vail somewhere. If you've ever lost a phone or wallet you know that terrible sinking feeling that runs through your veins. I quickly remembered that I had the Find My iPhone app installed on my phone, which allows you to remotely track the location of the phone via another iPhone or computer. So we fired up the app on my brother's iPhone and found the approximate location of my phone, the only problem was that it was somewhere on the mountain not near major roads or landmarks. By the time we updated the tracking a few minutes later, we saw the phone moving on a different part of the mountain which meant someone had picked it up. It was virtually impossible to chase down the phone on the chairlifts and trails while we were on the mountain so we went on with the rest of our day hoping it would be turned in at the lodge, but no luck.
Later, we followed the phone all the way back into town, got the local police involved and headed to the apartment complex where the tracking showed the phone was located. The GPS tracking worked well, but just wasn't accurate enough to pinpoint the exact location inside buildings or crowded areas.  The best we could do was call the phone, have the officers knock on doors and hope we could hear the it ringing. Unfortunately this story doesn't have a happy ending and we never recovered the phone, but at least I was able to remotely lock the phone and secure my data. The moral of the story is: if you have an iPhone or iPad, set up Find My iPhone right away in case this happens to you. All this aside, we had a great week on the slopes an a awesome trip.
***UPDATE: The phone has been returned! Read the full story here.
